“The Breathworks approach to Mindfulness-Based Pain Management (MBPM) is the most comprehensive, in-depth, scientifically up-to-date and user-friendly approach to learning the how of living with chronic pain and reclaiming one’s life”
Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD author, Professor Emeritus of the University of Massachusetts Medical School

The Mindfulness Helper delivers the Breathworks approach to Mindfulness-Based Pain Management (MBPM), which is the main programme used world-wide to teach mindfulness to people living with chronic pain and illness and their carers.

The Breathworks approach is based on the experience of Vidyamala Burch who sustained a severe spinal injury in 1976 when she was sixteen leading to multiple surgeries and partial paraplegia.

Vidyamala wrote two popular books on the subject of using mindfulness for pain management – Living Well with Pain and Illness and Mindfulness for Health – in which she describes her insights of years of using mindfulness to manage her pain and teaching it to other people.

Although similar to Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), Breathworks MBPM has some specific applications for people living with pain and illness. These include a distinctive approach to mindfulness in daily life and mindful movements. Breathworks MBPM also includes compassion and acceptance meditations as part of the core curriculum.

This is an 8-week self-management course, which is guided by an experienced mindfulness teacher, who has generally a lived experience of chronic pain and illness.

So wherever people are, whatever their health and mobility, they will find that there is a way to learn mindfulness for relieving the suffering that comes from living with pain, illness or stressful circumstances.
